Sambatucada

Based in Burlington, Vermont and founded in 1995 to play at Burlington’s Discover Jazz Festival, Sambatucada is dedicated to bringing the energy, passion and joy of Afro-Brazilian street music and dance to Vermont. Patterned after Brazilian carnival-style percussion orchestras with up to 300 musicians, Sambatucada is a smaller-scale version of the traditional community street bands of Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia. With an active core of 15-20 musicians, Sambatucada is an all-volunteer community band comprised of people from all walks of life, united in their love for Brazilian music and percussion. Over the years, Sambatucada has become well known all over northern and central Vermont for exciting performances at parades, festivals, celebrations and community events of every conceivable variety, including Discover Jazz, Highlight, First Night, Mardi Gras, Vermont Pride Parade, and many more. They play a variety of Afro-Brazilian rhythms using traditional Brazilian instruments.

Will Patton Ensemble

Mandolinist and all around string wizard Will Patton, also well known for his fine bass playing, draws a strong influence from jazz, Hot Club, and Brazilian music. His collaborations with the manouche guitarist Ninine Garcia from Paris, documented in the CDs “Peripherque” and “String Theory” have been enthusiastically reviewed both in the U.S. and abroad. He teaches jazz mandolin at Jay Ungar and Molly Mason’s Ashokan Camp and the Django in June Festival at Smith College. He has performed with Mose Allison and his bands have opened for such acts as Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt and Van Morrison. For the Ensemble, Will is joined by longtime collaborators, guitarist Steve Blair, violinist David Gusakov, Clyde Stats on bass, and Gabe Jarrett on drums.

Patuscada

Formed by Marina Martins on vocals, Lúcio Costa on violão (Brazilian 7-string guitar), and members of Sambatucada on percussion, Patuscada brings together lovers of Brazilian music to play a danceable mix of forró, samba and axé. Taken from a Gilberto Gil song, “Patuscada” means "a festive gathering to eat and drink; lively, fun and noisy revelry.” Patuscada invites you to come and join the party!"
